As a computer professional, I have an opportunity to visit hundreds of sites. Some for reference, some for official needs and some times for entertainment too. From approx last 5 years it has been noticed that people are now more focused on website design not with content in it. They use magazine designs, eye catching images, videos and other visual gadgets. But unfortunately they forget that website is meant for useful information. If some website has fabulous design but no or less relevant information then it is just a piece of crab. People browse websites for useful information not to see well decor images and text. In a nutshell the core function of website is to provide information and its decor is non-functional requirement.
I think, now its time for minimalist websites with fast browsing capabilities and information rich instead of graphics rich. We need websites not celebrities.
Most of you have already known that text takes least time to load and graphics need maximum time and resources. But at the same time it doesn't mean, a simple html formatted text should be displayed, we should choose balance between functional and non-functional requirements. There should be a predefined standard for websites development, as we have in desktop application development.
Then what should be the qualities of a website? The website should be:
- Fast to load
- Content Rich
- Fresh Content
- Easy navigation menu
- Carefully chosen color contrast
- Compatibility with various browsers.
- Efficient utilization of webpage space.
- Responsive
Moreover comments are required that should we go for two versions of websites; one for those who required information and other for those who require celebrity?
