Edge is according to Microsoft the most efficient browser when it comes to expending energy. An argument which has perhaps little weight on a desktop PC.
In the laboratory, so with special conditions, Microsoft has used machines of the same specification for measuring the potential power autonomy using four browsers: Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. The test passed including browsing on sites such that Amazon , Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia, opening new tabs and scrolling content. The test was automated and was the same amount of work in all cases.
During this test, Microsoft has measured the average consumption of CPU, GPU, and Wi-Fi. Edge has consumed 2068 mW, 819 mW Chrome 2, Opera 3077 mW and Firefox 3161 mW. The average consumption is Edge 465.24 mW to 493.5 mW for Firefox and Chrome 719.72 mW.
More practically, Microsoft played the same HD video streams to all four . On this basis, the battery is drained in 7:22 with Edge, with Opera 6:19, 5:09 and 4:20 with Firefox with Chrome. A difference of about 70% between the first and the last. These results are not found elsewhere than at Microsoft.
Interestingly, all figures have been obtained with the current version of Edge. Now Microsoft is preparing a series of improvements to the browser version that will accompany the annual Update for Windows 10 at the end of next month.
In another blog post , the company describes these contributions: optimizations on the treatment of tabs in the background (particularly on JavaScript), cutting the playback of all content not considered essential in a site, work on animations and interface elements, as well as changes on transfers that are expected to plunge the Wi-Fi card more often in low power mode. These are changes that mostly resemble what was done recently with Opera version 38.
These tests show a recent trend among browser vendors. Power consumption becomes a new argument, such as security and standards compliance in previous years. Overall, it can only be welcomed, because, beyond the obvious ecological aspect of this approach, users will see the concrete benefits with batteries that will run longer and less frequent refills.
The measures also highlight the progress that has to Google on Chrome - again. The browser was already widely scratched in the results displayed by Opera. Microsoft results are much more accurate than those of Opera but generally refer to the same idea.
The question that remains unanswered is whether these improvements will be sufficient to make Edge , a famous browser? Obviously, the idea of greater efficiency is pleasant, but users tend to turn to what meets their needs. With Firefox and Chrome, many are accustomed of using simple gestures, such as pin a tab or install an extension. With Edge, these features are not available until now.
