Almost all Information Technology
fellows are well aware of computer viruses and their destruction. A brief
description of virus can be a, “A self replication program capable of
destroying or corrupting data”. You can imagine that what will be the loss of
losing precious data.
The first known IBM PC compatible virus in
Brain Virus. It was developed by two brothers, Amjad Farooq Alvi and Basit Farooq
Alvi, of Lahore , Pakistan . Alvi brothers wrote this
first self replicating program in computer viruses history and proved the
theory of John von
Neumann. It is boot-sector
virus and infects the floppy disks, formatted using FAT. Following Text can be
seen on infected floppy disk:
“Welcome to the
Dungeon

Amjad (pvt) Ltd.

It is the first STEALTH virus in
computer history and hides itself by hooking INT 13 and displays correct boot
record when an attempt is made to read boot record. It also changes the disk
label to © Brain. In computer viruses history Alvi brothers will always be
known for their Brain Virus.
Now the question arises, Is
Pakistan the origin of Digital Terrorism? My answer is simply NO. Just read the
definition of a computer virus as I stated above, “Program that destroys or
corrupt data”. Brain virus doesn’t destroy or corrupt any data. Moreover, it
checks for hard disk and leave it intact without modifying any thing. It was
intentionally coded to protect precious data. There was no complaint of losing
any data. So instead of virus, Brain was basically a copy protection program. It
is an interesting fact that most technology freaks consider Brain as virus. It
defamed Pakistan
and our talent. We should spread the words that Pakistan is pioneer in developing a
Copy protection Program not a virus. You can check the details at Brain Virus and decide
it yourself, is it virus or not? And if you are agreed then spread the words.
